Man walking towards cross
Focusing on Jesus rather than on your problem is the source of every healing and breakthrough.

There is something deeply encouraging about the moment when the enemy throws his worst at you and still, nothing happens. Today, we are sitting with a powerful truth: no matter what has latched onto your life, your family, or your future, God has made you fireproof. Let that settle in your heart as we walk through this together.

Looking Up Changes Everything

Before we get to Paul on the island of Malta, we need to understand the foundation of what God has been building across Scripture. Back in the wilderness, when the Israelites were being bitten by venomous snakes, God gave Moses a striking instruction. He told him to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a pole. Anyone who looked at it would live.

The key was never in the severity of the bite. It was never in the stage of the infection. It was never in how long the poison had been working. It was simply in where they fixed their eyes.

Jesus himself drew on this image when he said:

"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him." John 3:14-15

Looking upon Jesus, upon what he did on the cross, is the source of every healing, every freedom, and every victory in your life. When we meditate on his word, we are looking upon Jesus. When we confess his promises, we are looking upon Jesus. Because Jesus is the Word, and the Word is Jesus. And in that place of looking, every poison the enemy has injected begins to lose its power.

The Snake That Would Not Win

Now, let us walk onto the island of Malta with the Apostle Paul. Paul and his companions had just survived a violent shipwreck. They were cold, exhausted, and grateful to be alive. The islanders showed them kindness and welcomed them with a fire to warm themselves.

As Paul was gathering sticks and placing them on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, shot out and latched onto his hand. Here is how the Scripture records it:

"Paul gathered a pile of brushwood, and as he put it on the fire, a viper driven out by the heat fastened itself on his hand." Acts 28:3

Imagine that moment. You have just escaped a deadly shipwreck. You are simply trying to stay warm. And now, a venomous snake is hanging from your hand. That is the nature of the enemy. He does not wait for a convenient time. He shows up right after the trial. Right after the storm. Right when you think the worst is over.

When People Speak Like Poison

But notice something. The snake was not the only problem Paul faced in that moment. The islanders who witnessed it immediately began to speak over him:

"When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, 'This man must be a murderer. Although he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.'" Acts 28:4

They were not wrong about Paul's past. He had been part of the persecution and killing of Christians, including the stoning of Stephen. But that was who Paul was before Jesus transformed him. The enemy loves to drag up your past and use it to define your present. He whispers that your mistakes are catching up with you. That your failures are evidence of your future. That justice, in the wrong sense, is coming for you.

Have you ever been in the middle of a real crisis and had someone come alongside you, not to help, but to remind you of everything you did wrong? Not only are you dealing with the snake on your hand, but you are also dealing with the words of people who seem more venomous than the snake itself.

You are fighting two battles at once: the problem itself and the words of people who interpret the problem for you.

But watch what Paul does.

Shake It Off and Suffer No Harm

Paul did not panic. He did not consult the islanders about what kind of snake it was. He did not ask how many people had died from that particular viper before. He simply shook the snake off into the fire.

"But Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm." Acts 28:5

This is the prophetic picture for your life. The enemy may have attached himself to you. But the end of the story is that you will suffer no harm. God did not remove the fiery furnace from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He made them fireproof inside it. And that is exactly what he is doing for you right now.

God does not always remove the fire. He makes you fireproof inside it.

Your protection is not dependent on your circumstances. It is not dependent on the economy, the doctor's report, or what the world is saying. You are in the world, but you are not of the world. You are born of God, and that changes everything.

In the very beginning of God's covenant with Abraham, he made this declaration over his servant:

"After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: 'Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.'" Genesis 15:1

He is still your shield today. You are covered. You are in a bubble of God's protection, and what the enemy intends to harm you cannot penetrate it.

Conclusion

The snake latched on, but Paul suffered no harm. The people spoke negatively, but God had the final word. And the same is true for your life today. Whatever has latched onto you, whatever poisonous words have been spoken over you, whatever the enemy has tried to inject into your family, your body, or your future, it has no final authority over you. You are born of God. You are anointed. You are fireproof. Lift your eyes to Jesus, shake off what the enemy has sent against you, and walk forward knowing that the very people who predicted your downfall are about to change their minds and say, "This family is blessed by God."

Reflect on This

  1. In what area of your life have you been looking at the snake instead of looking at Jesus, and how can you shift your focus today?

  2. Are there words spoken over you from your past or from people around you that you need to consciously shake off, just as Paul shook the viper into the fire?

Prayer

Father, I thank you that I am fireproof in you. Every venomous word, every scheme of the enemy, every poison that has tried to attach itself to my life has already been defeated on the cross of Jesus Christ. I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I am born of you. I am covered by your blood. I am surrounded by your angels. I shake off every lie, every fear, and every false report right now, and I receive your healing, your freedom, and your protection in full. The enemy's attacks will not stand, and the people who doubted me will see your glory on my life. I walk in your divine favor today. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Key Takeaways

  • Focusing on Jesus rather than on your problem is the source of every healing and breakthrough.

  • The enemy often attacks right after a trial, but God's protection remains fully active in those moments.

  • The negative words spoken over your past do not define your future in Christ.

  • God does not always remove the difficult circumstance, but he makes you completely fireproof inside it.
