Why Jesus Wept And What It Means For You

October 27, 2026

Have you ever stood at a graveside moment in your life, not necessarily the loss of a person, but the loss of a dream, a relationship, a season of health, or a sense of hope, and wondered whether God even sees what you are going through? Today, there is a profound and tender answer waiting for you in one of the most moving scenes in all of Scripture. Jesus sees. Jesus is moved. And Jesus acts.
The Moment Jesus Wept
When Mary came to Jesus after the death of her brother Lazarus, she fell at His feet with words that carried the weight of four days of grief.
"When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.'" John 11:32
And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the mourners around her weeping, something happened inside Him that changed the atmosphere of the entire moment.
"When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled." John 11:33
And then came those two famous words: Jesus wept.
"Jesus wept." John 11:35
This was not a moment of weakness. This was not Jesus being overwhelmed by circumstances He could not control. Jesus wept because He looked at the suffering of humanity and felt a deep, holy anger at what sin had done to the world He created. He did not design mankind to experience death, decay, and despair. Before the fall, He breathed His own life into humanity. He created people to live in His image, to declare His glory, to carry His very likeness forever.
Jesus wept because you were never designed for this.
And that is what makes this moment so personal for you today. He is not a distant God watching your struggles from afar. He is moved by your situation. He is troubled in spirit for you. He is deeply concerned because what you are experiencing is not your original design.
You Were Not Designed for This
You were not designed for anxiety or depression. You were not designed for sickness or poverty. You were not designed for broken relationships or dead-end circumstances. You were not designed to watch days of your life slip away in defeat. God knitted you together with a great calling and a greater purpose. You were designed to be filled with the life of God, the power of God, the anointing of God, and the glory of God. You bear the image of your Creator.
"So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." Genesis 1:27
Whenever you drift from this design, whenever the enemy succeeds in keeping you bound in hopelessness, Jesus is moved. But He does not stay moved without acting. He moves into your situation.
Martha's Declaration of Continued Faith
Before Jesus moved to the tomb, Martha made a statement that stands as one of the great declarations of faith in all of Scripture. Even after grief, even after confusion, even after questioning why Jesus had not come sooner, she stood before Him and said:
"She said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, I have believed and continue to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.'" John 11:27
She did not fully understand everything Jesus was doing. She had already processed her grief, questioned the timing, and wrestled with theology. But in that moment, she chose to believe. Not in what she could see. Not in the four-day-old tomb. But in who Jesus is.
And that is the invitation before you today. You may not understand the timing. You may not understand why things have gotten worse before they got better. But the question Jesus asked Martha is the same question He is asking you right now: Do you believe this?
You may not understand His timing, but you can trust His nature.
The Resurrection Power Moving Right Now
When Jesus finally stood before the tomb, He did not simply mourn with the mourners. He spoke. He commanded. He acted. And Lazarus, four days dead, walked out alive.
"Jesus said to her, 'Did I not say to you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?'" John 11:40
Notice the sequence. Belief first. Glory second. You do not see the glory and then believe. You believe, and then you see the glory.
Right now, the spirit of Jesus is moving deeply into your situation. Into the places you cannot see. Into the rooms of your home, the corners of your workplace, the hidden areas of your health, your finances, and your relationships. The power of resurrection is not reserved for the last days. It is available because Jesus Himself, the Resurrection and the Life, has entered your situation.
"Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us." Ephesians 3:20
Every anxiety loses its grip. Every spirit of infirmity is challenged. Every place the enemy has spoken defeat is being confronted by the living power of the One who raised Lazarus from the grave. You may have given up, but God has not given up on you. He will resurrect. He will raise. He will restore. He will redeem. He has a great plan to prosper you because you have come to the name of Jesus.
You may have given up, but God has never given up on you.
Conclusion
Today, let the tears of Jesus remind you that He sees your pain and He is not indifferent to it. Let the words He spoke over Lazarus echo over your own life: this situation will not end in death. It will end in the glory of God. Because He is not just the God of someday. He is the God of right now. Receive the resurrection power of Jesus into every area of your life today. He has come to give you life, and life in abundance.
Reflect on This
In what specific area of your life do you need to receive the truth that you were not designed for this, and how does that shift your perspective on what God can do?
Jesus asked Martha, "Do you believe this?" How would you honestly answer that question about your own situation today?
Prayer
Father, I thank You that You are moved by my situation and that You have never stopped working on my behalf. I declare that I was designed to carry Your image, Your glory, and Your life. I believe right now that the resurrection power of Jesus is penetrating every dead area of my life. Every sickness, every failure, every broken relationship, every hopeless circumstance is subject to the power of the One who raised Lazarus from the grave. I receive restoration, healing, promotion, and abundant life right now. In Jesus Name, Amen.
