Barefoot man with a shoulder bag walks on a sandy beach beside a calm ocean under a cloudy sky.
Walking in God's love is not an effort of willpower but a natural overflow of the new life Jesus has placed inside you.

What if the very struggles that make you feel alone are actually proof that you have not yet grasped the most powerful truth in Scripture? Today, we are stepping into one of the most intimate moments in the entire Gospel of John, a moment that happened the night before everything changed. And what God wants to reveal to you through it has the power to transform how you see yourself, your circumstances, and your walk with Him.

The Night Before Everything Changed

In John chapter 13, we find Jesus gathered with His disciples the night before the Passover. This was His last night on earth before going to the cross. And what does He choose to do? He gets up from supper, wraps a towel around His waist, and begins washing His disciples' feet. Every single one of them. Even Judas.

This was not a random act of humility. This was a deliberate, intentional moment loaded with meaning. And when Jesus came to Peter, Peter could not handle it.

"When he came to Simon Peter, he said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?' Jesus replied to him, 'You do not realize now what I am doing, but you will understand it later.'" John 13:6-7

Peter pushed back even harder. He declared that Jesus would never wash his feet. And that is when Jesus said something that stopped everything.

"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." John 13:8

The moment Peter heard that, everything shifted.  He went from “You will never wash my feet” to “Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”

Removing the Sandal, Receiving the Inheritance

To understand the depth of what Jesus was doing, think back to Moses at the burning bush in Exodus chapter 3. God told Moses to remove his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. That was not simply about keeping a sacred space clean. It carried a much deeper meaning. When Moses removed his sandals, he was submitting his ways to God. He was saying, "I will walk only where You lead me. My steps will follow Yours."

"Do not come any closer,' God said. 'Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.'" Exodus 3:5

In Hebrew culture, the sandal was a symbol of covenant and inheritance. When you removed your sandal before God, you were opening yourself to receive a new inheritance, His holiness, His authority, and His power.

Jesus was doing the same thing with His disciples. He was removing the old. He was washing away the old walk, the old ways, the old life. And He was granting them a new inheritance. A God kind of life. Not just any life, but the very life that was lost in the Garden of Eden, now fully restored.

"Whoever receives the one I send receives me. And whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." John 13:20

You carry that same inheritance. When people encounter you, they are not just meeting a believer. They are coming into contact with the One who lives inside you. You carry His anointing. You carry His purpose. You carry the God kind of life.

A New Commandment That Changes Everything

After washing their feet, Jesus gave His disciples something to walk away with.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." John 13:34

And He followed that with a declaration that is still just as true for us today.

"By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:35

This love is not something you manufacture in your own strength. It flows from the new life you have received. When you have been washed by His blood, when you carry His inheritance, love becomes the overflow of who you are in Him.

The new inheritance Jesus gives you is not just for your benefit. It is a love that flows outward and draws others to the Father.

Peter then asked where Jesus was going, and said he would lay down his life for Him. But Jesus responded with a word of truth rather than flattery.

"Jesus answered, 'Will you really lay down your life for me? I assure you and most solemnly say to you, before a rooster crows, you will deny and completely disown me three times.'" John 13:38

This is such a crucial point. It is not about what you are willing to give to Jesus. It is about what you are willing to receive from Him. Peter tried to give before he had truly received. And we know what happened. He denied Jesus three times. His cup was empty because he had not yet fully received. You cannot pour out what you have not taken in. Before you can walk in power, before you can love with that love, before you can speak with that authority, you must first receive the life that only Jesus can give.

Conclusion

The night before the cross, Jesus did not preach a complicated sermon. He knelt down and washed feet. He demonstrated that the new life He came to give requires surrender, receiving, and connection. You have been washed by His blood. That means you have a share with Him. You carry His life, His love, and His inheritance. Walk in it boldly today.

Reflect on This

  1. In what areas of your life are you trying to give to God before you have truly received from Him, and how might fully receiving His love change how you walk with Him?

  2. How does understanding that you carry God's inheritance and anointing change the way you see your interactions with the people around you today?

Prayer

Father, I thank You that I have been washed by the blood of Jesus and I am a partaker of Your divine inheritance. I receive the God kind of life You have given me. I walk in the authority, the love, and the power that belongs to me through Jesus Christ. I am not empty. I am filled with Your life, and I pour it out to those around me. My feet are surrendered to Your path and I walk only where You lead. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Key Takeaways

  • Surrendering your ways to God opens you up to receive a brand new inheritance of His life, authority, and power.

  • You cannot give what you have not received, so receiving the life of Christ must always come before trying to serve from your own strength.

  • When you have been washed by the blood of Jesus, you carry His anointing and become a living encounter with the Father for everyone around you.

  • Walking in God's love is not an effort of willpower but a natural overflow of the new life Jesus has placed inside you.
