Building upon the foundation of our new life in Christ, we now delve into the practical, day-to-day implications of this transformative reality. This meditation focuses on the tangible experience of freedom from sin's grip and the awe-inspiring, immeasurable power that is available to us through our union with Christ. Drawing from the powerful truths found in Romans 6 and Ephesians 1, we will discover how to access and unleash this resurrection power to live victoriously in every area of our lives.
Freedom from Sin's Grip
Romans 6:6-7 explains,
"For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin."
Our old sinful nature, that part of us that was once enslaved to sin's demands, has been decisively crucified with Christ. It has been rendered powerless, stripped of its authority and control. We are no longer under its dominion, forced to obey its every whim. The body, which was once a tool of sin, an instrument of unrighteousness, is now liberated, set free to be a vessel of righteousness, a temple of the Holy Spirit. This freedom is not a license to sin, a free pass to indulge in our old ways, but an empowerment to live a life that is pleasing to God, a life that reflects His character and fulfills His purposes. We are no longer bound by the heavy chains of guilt and shame, but we are free to walk in the light, joy, and peace of the newness of life that Christ offers.
"Anyone who has died has been set free from sin,"
reinforces the absolute, undeniable freedom that we have in Christ. This freedom is not a partial or temporary reprieve, a brief respite from sin's relentless pursuit, but a complete and permanent release from its power. Sin no longer has the right to dictate our choices, control our actions, or condemn our souls. We are no longer under its oppressive condemnation or its tyrannical dominion. We are free to live in the ever-increasing righteousness and power of Christ's resurrection. This freedom is not something we earn or deserve; it is a free gift of God's grace, lavishly poured out upon us through faith in Jesus Christ.
Living with Christ
Romans 6:8-11 encourages us,
"Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus."
Because we have died with Christ, sharing in His death to sin, we also live with Him, sharing in His resurrected life. This is not just a future hope, a distant promise, but a present reality. We are alive with Christ in this very moment, sharing in the power and victory of His resurrected life. Death, which once held the ultimate power over humanity, the final, inescapable enemy, no longer has mastery over us. Christ conquered death once and for all through His resurrection, and we share in His triumphant victory. He died to sin once, a complete and final sacrifice, never to be repeated, and now He lives eternally to God, fully devoted to His Father's will and purposes. We are called to follow His example, to count ourselves dead to sin, refusing to yield to its temptations and allure, and alive to God, actively seeking to know Him, love Him, and obey Him. This means actively and consciously choosing to live in obedience to God's will, empowered by the resurrection life of Christ that now resides within us.
"Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus,"
is a call to actively and intentionally embrace our new identity in Christ. This is not a passive acceptance of a theological concept, a mere intellectual assent to a doctrine, but an active and ongoing choice to live in the vibrant reality of our freedom. We must consciously choose to reject sin's deceitful whispers and embrace the righteousness of God. We must daily renew our minds with the life-giving truth of God's Word and allow the Holy Spirit to transform our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. This is a lifelong process of growth and transformation, a continual journey of becoming more and more like Christ.
The Immeasurable Power Within
Ephesians 1:19-20 reveals,
"and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms."
The same awe-inspiring, world-altering power that raised Christ from the dead—the same power that overcame the ultimate power of death, hell, and the grave—now resides within every believer. This is not a small or insignificant power, a mere spark of divinity, but the immeasurable, limitless power of God Himself. This power is not dormant or inactive; it is readily available to us, waiting to be unleashed. It is the power to overcome every obstacle, to face every challenge with courage and confidence, and to live a life of victory in every area. It is the power to resist temptation, to break free from the chains of addiction, to heal broken relationships, and to fulfill God's unique purpose for our lives. It is the power to live a life that is pleasing to God and brings glory to His name.
"Immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe,"
highlights the incredible, limitless potential that we have in Christ. We are not ordinary people, bound by limitations and defined by our weaknesses; we are children of the Most High God, heirs of His eternal kingdom, and carriers of His resurrection power. We have been given everything we need for life and godliness, equipped with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. We have been empowered to live a life that is above and beyond anything we could ever imagine, a life that is filled with purpose, meaning, and eternal significance. We are called to walk in this power, to demonstrate it to the world, and to bring glory to God in all that we do.
The Thief on the Cross
The story of the thief on the cross is a powerful and poignant illustration of the boundless reach of God's grace and mercy. Even at the very last moment, even after a life marked by sin and rebellion, this man found salvation by simply believing in Jesus. He recognized Jesus as the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and he placed his faith in Him. He didn't have time for good works, religious rituals, or elaborate ceremonies. All he had was faith, a simple, childlike trust in Jesus, and that was enough. This story reminds us that salvation is not earned through our own efforts, our good deeds, or our religious performance, but received as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ. If God could extend such extravagant grace to the thief on the cross, how much more will He do for us who have received His resurrected power and are walking in the light of His truth?
Conclusion
Commit to walking daily in the vibrant awareness of the resurrection power that resides within you. Embrace your freedom from sin, reject its deceitful whispers, and live a victorious life in Christ, empowered by His limitless grace and strength. This is your inheritance, your birthright as a child of God.
