Hagar and her son near well
Spiritual vision allows us to see resources and provisions that were always present but previously unnoticed.

Today, let's explore how our spiritual sight transforms our reality. When our eyes are opened to God's truth, we discover resources that were always present but previously unseen. This meditation invites you to experience the enlightenment that comes when we set our minds on spiritual things.

Setting Your Mind on the Spirit

Where you set your mind determines your direction. Just as a GPS can only guide you to the destination you've programmed, your mind leads you toward whatever you focus upon.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. - Romans 8:5-6

This isn't new-age philosophy, it's biblical wisdom. Scripture clearly teaches that our thoughts shape our reality: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." When we set our minds on spiritual things, we experience life and peace. When our thoughts dwell on fleshly concerns, we experience death and anxiety.

When God Opens Our Eyes

Consider Hagar's story, a woman rejected, abandoned in the wilderness with her son, their water depleted. In her desperation, she placed her child under a bush and walked away, unable to watch him die. She sat down and wept bitterly.

God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there." - Genesis 21:17

In her darkest moment, God's first words to her were "Do not be afraid." This divine pattern appears throughout Scripture when God addresses someone in trouble, He begins with "Fear not." Perhaps this message is for you today, whatever circumstances you're facing.

Seeing What Was Always There

The turning point in Hagar's story comes in a simple yet profound moment:

Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. - Genesis 21:19

The well had been there all along, Hagar simply couldn't see it through her tears and fears. When God opened her spiritual eyes, she discovered the provision that had always been present.

How often do we miss God's provision because our vision is clouded by worry? In anxiety and depression, we often fail to notice what's right before us. Everything we need is available at God's table, we simply need opened eyes to perceive it.

From Scarcity to Abundance

Hagar was searching for a few drops of water but discovered an entire well. This is how God blesses, radically and abundantly. You might be concerned about a small problem that, in God's economy, isn't even a problem. You have access to the living water!

You are the God who sees me, for I have now seen the One who sees me. - Genesis 16:13

Hagar gave God a new name, El Roi, "the God who sees me." In her revelation, she recognized not only that God saw her but that she could now see Him who looks after her. This mutual seeing is the essence of spiritual vision.

Conclusion

When our eyes are opened, we discover that what we thought was a barren wilderness actually contains wells of provision. God doesn't just offer drops of blessing but overflowing wells. He doesn't just address our immediate needs but promises to make something great from our lives.

Whatever wilderness you're traversing, God sees you. He hears your cries. And He wants to open your eyes to see the provision that has been there all along. Set your mind on spiritual things, and experience the life and peace that comes from seeing with divine vision.

Reflect on This

  1. In what areas of your life do you need God to open your eyes to see His provision that might already be present?

  2. How might setting your mind on spiritual things rather than fleshly concerns change your perspective on your current challenges?

Prayer

I declare that I am seen by El Roi, the God who sees me. My spiritual eyes are opened to perceive the wells of provision in every wilderness. I set my mind on things of the Spirit, receiving the life and peace that flows from this divine perspective. Where I once saw scarcity, I now recognize abundance. Where I once felt alone, I now know I am accompanied by the One who hears my every cry. My mind is renewed, my vision is clear, and my path is directed by the Spirit of God. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Key Takeaways

  • Where you set your mind determines your direction, a mind set on the Spirit produces life and peace.

  • God's first message to those in trouble is consistently "Fear not"—a reminder that we never face our battles alone.

  • Spiritual vision allows us to see resources and provisions that were always present but previously unnoticed.

  • God doesn't just meet our immediate needs but offers radical blessings that exceed our expectations.

  • Like Hagar, we can experience the revelation that we see the God who sees us.
