You Are Not Who You Used to Be

Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt like the old version of yourself was still staring back at you? Maybe the weight of past mistakes, old habits, or painful memories keeps whispering that nothing has really changed. But here is the truth that can completely transform how you see yourself today: when you gave your life to Jesus, something happened on the inside of you that is far more radical than you realize. You did not just turn over a new leaf. You received an entirely new nature. And that changes everything.
You Have Three Parts, and One of Them Is Brand New
The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:23
"May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:23
You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. Most of us are well acquainted with our bodies and our emotions, but very few of us truly understand what happened to our spirit the moment we accepted Jesus.
Before you came to Christ, your spirit carried what the Bible calls the sin nature. This was not something you chose. You were born with it, inherited through the first man, Adam. Every person who has ever lived came into the world carrying that old nature. But here is the good news that God has been trying to get into your heart: you do not have to live under that nature anymore.
When you were born again, you received a brand new spirit. Not a patched-up version of the old one. A completely new one. The nature of God Himself was placed inside of you.
"And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you." - Ezekiel 36:26
This was not just a New Testament idea. This was a promise God was pointing toward all through the Old Testament. And in Jesus, that promise became your reality.
How Sin Entered, and How It Was Undone
To understand what you received, you have to understand what was lost. The Bible is very clear in Romans chapter 5 about how sin entered the human race.
"Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned." - Romans 5:12
Notice the word sin here is singular. It is not referring to a list of wrong actions. It is talking about a nature. A condition. A state of being. Through Adam, the sin nature entered humanity, and with it came death, sickness, and every broken thing you see in the world today. It spread like a pandemic, touching every person born after that moment.
But Romans 5 does not stop there. It goes on to deliver the most stunning reversal in all of history.
"But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many." - Romans 5:15
"Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men." - Romans 5:18
What Adam lost through his disobedience, Jesus came as a man to completely restore. The moment you put your faith in Jesus, you were justified. You were made right with God. The sin nature lost its grip on your spirit, and the Spirit of Jesus took up residence inside of you.
Your Spirit Is Sealed, But Your Mind Needs Renewing
Here is where so many believers get stuck. Your spirit is completely renewed. In fact, Ephesians 1:13 tells us that when you accepted Jesus, your spirit was sealed with the Holy Spirit.
"When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit" Ephesians 1:13
It is locked in. Secured. Nothing can change what happened in your spirit.
But your soul, which includes your mind, your emotions, and your memories, still carries the fingerprints of the old life. It remembers the wounds. It rehearses the failures. It replays the shame and the bullying and the mistakes. And if you do not actively work to renew your mind, you will keep living as though the old nature is still in charge, even though it is not.
"You are not a sinner because you sin. You had a sin nature, and that is why you sinned. But that nature is gone."
The fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22,
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22
All of these already exist inside your spirit. They are not things you are working to produce. They are who you already are in Christ. The renewing of your mind is simply the process of learning to live out of what is already true about you on the inside.
You Are Like Jesus in This World
This is perhaps the most staggering truth in all of the Scripture that was shared. Look at what the apostle John writes:
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." - 1 John 4:7
And then just a few verses later:
"By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world." - 1 John 4:17
Did you catch that? As Jesus is, so are you in this world. Not one day in heaven. Right now. In this world. Because the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, you carry His nature, His authority, and His identity wherever you go.
"I am like Jesus in this world."
Say that again until it begins to feel true. Because it already is true in your spirit. Your mind just needs time to catch up.
Conclusion
You are not who your past says you are. You are not defined by your old mistakes, your family history, or the sin nature you were born with. Through faith in Jesus Christ, you have been given a new spirit, a new nature, and a brand new identity. The work now is not to earn this truth but to renew your mind to it, one day at a time, one Scripture at a time. You are born of God. You are sealed. You are chosen. You are like Jesus in this world. Live from that place.
Reflect on This
In what areas of your life are you still responding as though you have the old sin nature, even though your spirit has been completely renewed by Jesus?
What specific truth about your identity in Christ could you begin meditating on and declaring daily so that your mind starts to align with what is already true in your spirit?
Prayer
Father, I thank You that when I accepted Jesus, my old sin nature was completely removed and I received a brand new spirit. I declare today that I am born of God, sealed by the Holy Spirit, and justified through Jesus Christ. The Spirit of Jesus lives in me and I am like Jesus in this world. I choose to renew my mind with Your Word and to live from who I truly am on the inside. I am not my past. I am Your child, chosen, redeemed, and filled with Your Spirit. I walk today in that truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Key Takeaways
Every person is born with a sin nature inherited through Adam, but through faith in Jesus, that nature is completely replaced with a new spirit.
Your spirit is fully sealed and renewed the moment you accept Jesus, but your mind still needs to be actively renewed through the Word of God.
The fruit of the Spirit, including love, joy, and peace, already lives inside your spirit and does not need to be earned.
What one man Adam lost, one man Jesus fully restored for all who believe.
Because the Spirit of Jesus lives in you, you are like Jesus in this world right now, not just in eternity.
