A person in a white robe walks on water under a bright sky with clouds. Sunlight streams through, creating a serene, mystical mood.
Jesus is the God of restoration who cares about every small and broken place in your life, not just the grand stages.

Something beautiful happens when Jesus shows up. It does not matter how broken the situation looks, how empty the jars are, or how far the wine has run out. When Jesus is present, everything is subject to change. That is the good news woven all through the story of the first miracle recorded in the Gospel of John, and it is just as alive and relevant for you today as it was at that wedding in Cana two thousand years ago.

The Third Day Changes Everything

"On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there." John 2:1

Notice that little phrase right at the start: the third day. That is no coincidence. Jesus died on Good Friday and rose again on the third day, Easter Sunday. The resurrection power of Jesus is real, and it has to raise something. Whatever situation you are in right now, whatever has felt dead or stuck or hopeless, the third day is coming for you too. The resurrection power of God does not sit quietly. It moves, it acts, and it changes things.

Now here is something worth pausing on. The very first miracle Jesus ever performed was not in a grand temple or a major city. He was not surrounded by thousands of religious leaders. He was at a wedding. A regular, joyful, human celebration. And that matters deeply.

He Is the God of Restoration

When sin first entered the world, the first thing it damaged was marriage. The family. The covenant relationship between a husband and wife. So it is no accident that the first sign Jesus performed was at a wedding. He was making a statement from the very beginning of his ministry: I am the God of restoration.

When Jesus comes, something has to change.

You cannot remain in your brokenness when Jesus is present. You cannot stay in your sickness, your grief, your shame. His very presence is a disrupting, restoring, redeeming force. He does not ignore the small places either. Cana was one of the smallest towns in all of Galilee. If you were planning a headline miracle, you would not choose Cana. But Jesus does not worry about the size of the stage. He worries about the size of the need. Wherever someone is hurting, wherever someone is in lack, that is exactly where he wants to show up.

Mary Knew Something

When the wine ran out at the wedding, it was more than an inconvenience. In that culture, failing to provide for your guests was a serious social disgrace. The family hosting this wedding was in real trouble. And Mary, the mother of Jesus, went straight to him with the problem.

"When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, 'They have no wine.'" John 2:3

She did not panic. She did not try to fix it herself. She identified the problem and brought it to Jesus. That is such a simple but profound picture of faith. You do not have to have all the answers. You do not have to figure everything out. You just have to take the problem to Jesus.

Jesus responded by reminding her that his hour had not yet come. He had not yet stepped into the fullness of his public ministry, more than that Jesus couldn’t start the miracle as they were still serving wine. God can only commence your miracle when you stop working for it and start trusting him. Without missing a beat, turned to the servants and said something that would become the last recorded words of hers in all of Scripture.

Do Whatever He Tells You

"His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.'" John 2:5

Just six words. And they carry an entire lifetime of wisdom. This is the same Mary who, when the angel first told her she would conceive the Son of God, responded with, "By your word, let it be done." From the beginning to this moment, her posture was always the same: receive the word, trust the word, act on the word.

If you have this one revelation, your life will be transformed: do whatever he tells you.

When God speaks, believe it. When the Word instructs, follow it. Do not add to it. Do not dilute it with fear or doubt. When you accept the Word of God fully and act on it, you position yourself to witness the miracle.

Conclusion

This is where every miracle begins. Not with a dramatic moment or a bolt of lightning, but with a simple, faithful choice: I will take my problem to Jesus, and I will do whatever he tells me. He is the God of restoration. He cares about your small town, your home, your marriage, your emptiness. And when Jesus shows up, something has to change.

Reflect on This

  1. What situation in your life right now needs you to stop trying to fix it yourself and simply bring it to Jesus the way Mary did?

  2. Is there something God has already spoken over your life that you have not yet fully acted on? What would it look like to do whatever he tells you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are the God of restoration. I bring every empty place in my life before You right now. I believe Your Word over my situation. I choose to do whatever You tell me. I receive Your presence as the power that changes everything. Where I have been broken, I declare restoration. Where I have been empty, I declare overflow. In Jesus' name. Amen.
