Have you ever wondered what it is that truly draws people back to God? Not a lecture, not a list of religious rules, but something deeper and irresistible? The answer, as Scripture makes plain, is surprisingly simple. It is the goodness of God. Not fear. Not shame. Goodness. Today we are going to see exactly how that works through two very real stories, one from the fields of Moab and one from the streets of everyday life.
From Bethlehem to Moab and Back Again
The story begins with a woman named Naomi. She lived in Bethlehem, a name that literally means "the house of bread," a place of provision, blessing, and life. But Naomi and her family left. They moved to Moab, a land described in Deuteronomy 23:3 as a cursed place, far removed from God's blessing. What happened in Moab was devastating. She lost her husband. She lost both of her sons. She was left with nothing but grief and two daughters-in-law.
That is what life outside God's provision eventually looks like. Not abundance. Just emptiness.
But then a message reached Naomi while she was still in Moab.
"Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread." Ruth 1:6
She heard, and when she heard, she arose. That is the power of good news. It gets people moving.
The Blessing Has a New Address
Here is something worth pausing on. In the Old Testament, blessing was often tied to a place. Bethlehem. The Promised Land. But under the new covenant, the blessing is no longer tied to a location. It is tied to a Person. That Person is Jesus Christ.
"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us." Galatians 3:13
He took the curse so you could carry the blessing. Wherever you are, whoever you are, if you are in Christ, you are blessed. The curse has no legal claim over your life anymore.
And God's desire to bless is not vague or theoretical. It is specific and generous. The Bible says:
"Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all." 1 Chronicles 29:12
"Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever." Psalm 112:3
Think about it from a parent's perspective. If you have children, you want to give them good food, good shelter, the best life you can offer. If you who are human desire that for your children, how much more does your heavenly Father desire to provide for you?
He Went About Doing Good
This was the very pattern of Jesus when He walked the earth.
"God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." Acts 10:38
Jesus was not passive or withholding. He was active in goodness. He healed, He provided, He restored. That same Spirit who anointed Jesus now lives in you. That same goodness is available to you today.
When Goodness Becomes a Testimony
Here is where it gets wonderfully practical. The goodness of God is not meant to stay hidden inside you. It is meant to be seen. And when it is seen, it draws people in.
Think about your workplace. You walk in carrying a joy that does not crumble when the pressure rises. You carry a peace that does not make sense given your circumstances. People notice that. They start watching you. They start asking questions. What is your secret? How come things keep working out for you? How come you always seem to land on your feet? That is not coincidence, my friend. That is the goodness of God on display.
Let me tell you something from my own life. When we were trying to buy our first home, you know how competitive the housing market can be. It has always been crazy. So we went in for the ballot. And one of my colleagues pulled me aside and said, do not tell anyone you are entering this ballot. You are only going to increase your own competition. And I looked at her and I said, if God wants to give me this house, He will give it to me. It does not matter how many people apply. If God wants to bless me, no one can stop it. Amen.
And we got in. We got that house. Not because we were silent. Not because we were strategic. But because we serve a good God who had already decided to bless us.
You know what happened after that? People started asking questions. How did you get that? How did that work out for you? And that question, that curiosity, is your open door. You did not need to stand on a street corner and preach. Your life did the preaching for you.
That is exactly what happened when Ruth and Naomi heard that God had visited Bethlehem with bread. It was not a theological argument that got them moving. It was the report of God's tangible goodness, real provision, real blessing, in a real place, that triggered them to arise and go. People respond to evidence. And your life, blessed by a good God, is the most compelling evidence they will ever encounter.
The goodness of God in your life is the most powerful sermon you will ever preach.
So do not be shy about walking in favor. Do not shrink back from the blessing. Let it be visible. Let people see your joy, your provision, your peace, and your recovery. When they ask how, you know exactly what to say. And that is your moment to point them straight to Jesus.
Conclusion
Naomi heard that God was visiting His people with bread, and she arose. She got up from her grief, from Moab, from lack, and she went back toward the place of provision. That is always what happens when a person encounters the goodness of God. It gets them moving. It leads them home. Today, whatever Moab has kept you settled in, let this be the moment you arise. God is visiting His people. There is bread in the Father's house, and it has your name on it.
Reflect on This
In what areas of your life have you been living in your own "Moab," far from God's provision, and what would it look like to arise and return to His goodness today?
How visible is the goodness of God in your daily life, and are you allowing it to become a testimony that draws others closer to Him?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your goodness is greater than any curse, any lack, or any distance I have created between us. I declare that just as You visited Bethlehem with bread, You are visiting my life with provision, healing, and blessing. I arise from every place of limitation and step into the fullness of what Jesus purchased for me on the cross. Your goodness is leading me, and I receive it fully. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Key Takeaways
It is the goodness of God, not fear or shame, that leads people back to repentance.
Under the new covenant, blessing is tied to the Person of Jesus Christ, not a physical place or circumstance.
God desires to bless His children tangibly.
Jesus modeled active goodness by going about healing and restoring all who were oppressed.
The visible goodness of God working in a believer's life becomes a living testimony that draws others to Him.
