Today, let's explore the transformative power of renewing our minds. As believers, we're called to shift our thinking from an old pattern to a new reality in Christ. This isn't just positive thinking, it's about aligning our subconscious with the truth of who we are in Jesus.
The Tale of Two Identities
Our journey begins with understanding two distinct identities available to us. In Romans, we find a powerful contrast:
For if by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. - Romans 5:17
This verse reveals a fundamental truth: through Adam's disobedience, death entered our world. But through Christ's righteousness, we receive abundant grace and the gift of righteousness that enables us to reign in life.
When we operate from our identity in Adam, we experience the fruit of that connection, anxiety, depression, blame, and other negative emotions. These aren't just feelings; they're indicators that our subconscious mind is still programmed according to our old nature.
The Subconscious Transformation
The subconscious mind is the control center for how we walk, talk, react, and process emotions. By default, it's programmed according to Adam's fallen nature. The good news? We can reprogram it through a process of unlearning and relearning.
This transformation isn't automatic. Though we're already positioned in Christ positionally, our mindset requires daily renewal. As we teach our subconscious who we are in Christ, we begin to flow in the Spirit naturally.
The Fruit of the Spirit
In Galatians, we discover what naturally flows from a mind renewed in Christ:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. - Galatians 5:22-23
These qualities aren't something we strive to produce through willpower. They're the natural result of the Holy Spirit's presence within us. The fruit produced by the Spirit manifests as:
Love in all its varied expressions
Joy that overflows
Peace that subdues
Patience that endures (from a Greek word meaning "never quitting")
Kindness in action
A life full of virtue
Faith that prevails
Gentleness of heart
Strength of spirit
These qualities are already given to us in the spirit. Our task is to transfer them into our subconscious mind.
Erasing the Old Program
Think of your mind as a computer. Adam's program malfunctioned, creating errors in our thinking and behavior. Now we have a new program in Christ, but we must consciously operate from it by inserting its truths into our minds.
When anger rises, declare: "I have the Spirit of God within me. I have love."
When joy seems distant, affirm: "I have the joy given by God that overflows."
When anxiety threatens, remind yourself: "That's not who I am. In Christ, I have peace that subdues."
When impatience surfaces, claim your true nature: "In Christ, I have patience that endures."
When unkindness tempts you, remember: "In Christ, I have kindness to show in action."
Right Belief Produces Right Living
Most churches focus on modifying actions, what you should or shouldn't do. But this approach inevitably leads to failure because it addresses symptoms rather than the root cause.
Right belief produces right living.
Christianity isn't about behavior modification; it's about identity transformation. When you believe you're righteous in Christ, you naturally produce the fruit of righteousness. When you believe you have joy, peace, patience, and kindness in Christ, these qualities begin to manifest in your daily life.
Even in moments of anger or sin, boldly declare: "I am righteous in Christ. That's my identity." This isn't denial, it's standing firmly in your true identity despite temporary failures.
Reprogramming Your Subconscious
Many believers continue to identify themselves as sinners even after accepting Christ. But what does a sinner do? Sin. When you program your subconscious to believe you're a sinner, your actions will align with that identity.
Instead, feed your mind daily with the truth: "I am righteous in Christ. I have connection to life and blessing. I have joy that overflows, peace that subdues, love, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and strength of spirit."
As you consistently confess, declare, and believe these truths, you'll begin producing the corresponding fruit. Your subconscious was programmed by default in Adam because of sin, but now you're no longer in Adam's heritage. You belong to the heritage of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
The renewal of your mind isn't optional, it's essential for experiencing the abundant life Christ secured for you. By consciously choosing to think according to your identity in Christ rather than in Adam, you align your subconscious with spiritual reality.
This daily practice of renewing your mind transforms not just your thinking but your entire life. As you embrace who you truly are in Christ, the fruit of the Spirit naturally flows through you, bringing glory to God and blessing to those around you.
Reflect on This
How might your life change if you consistently reminded yourself of your true identity in Christ rather than focusing on your failures?
What specific area of your subconscious thinking needs renewal today, and what truth from Scripture will you use to transform it?
Prayer
Father, I thank You for the new identity You've given me in Christ. I declare that I am righteous, loved, and complete in Him. I choose to renew my mind with Your truth daily. As I align my thinking with who I am in Christ, I receive the fruit of Your Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and strength of spirit. I reject the old programming of my mind and embrace the new life You've given me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
