Today, let's explore a beautiful truth that has the power to transform lives: the goodness of God. This isn't just a theological concept; it's a living reality that draws hearts back to the Father. When we truly understand how good God is, everything changes. His goodness isn't just about feeling blessed; it's the very force that leads us back to His presence, no matter how far we've wandered.
The Message That Changes Everything
In the book of Ruth, we find Naomi, a woman who had left Bethlehem (the house of bread, the house of provision) and journeyed to Moab, a cursed land. She lost everything there: her husband, her two sons, her security. But then something remarkable happened.
"Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had visited His people by giving them bread." Ruth 1:6
She heard good news. God had visited His people and provided for them. This message of God's goodness was enough to make her arise from her place of loss and return home. When Ruth heard about this good God, she made a decision that would change her destiny forever. She chose to follow Naomi back to Bethlehem, back to the God who provides.
In the Old Testament, blessing often depended on a place. But in the New Covenant, blessing depends on a Person: Jesus Christ. He took the curse so that we could be blessed. We are blessed people, not because of where we are, but because of who we belong to.
The Father's Heart of Provision
God's character is to love you and provide for you. This isn't prosperity preaching; this is simply what the Bible declares.
"Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all." 1 Chronicles 29:12
"Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever." Psalm 112:3
If you, as a human parent, would give your child bread when they ask for it and not a stone, how much more does your Heavenly Father want to bless His children? God wants to share how good He is. What may be challenging for the world to obtain is never impossible for God.
When people see you full of joy, walking in favor, prospering in all you do, they'll ask: What's your secret? That's when the goodness of God becomes a testimony. Wherever you go, whatever you touch will prosper. This is what the Word of God promises.
"God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him." Acts 10:38
Jesus went about doing good. That's the nature of our God.
The Journey Back Home
The story of the prodigal son gives us another powerful picture of God's goodness. A young man demanded his inheritance while his father was still alive, essentially saying, "I wish you were dead." He took everything and journeyed to a far country, wasting it all in reckless living.
"But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want." Luke 15:14
He ended up feeding pigs and longing to eat what they ate. But then something shifted within him.
"But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!'" Luke 15:17
He remembered the goodness in his father's house. Even the servants had more than enough bread. This memory of provision, of goodness, caused him to arise.
"I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.'" Luke 15:18-19
The Father's Response
Here's where the story becomes breathtaking. As the son was still a great way off, rehearsing his speech of unworthiness, something unexpected happened.
"And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him." Luke 15:20
The father didn't wait. He ran. He had compassion. He embraced his son before a single word of apology could be spoken. The son came back thinking he would be a servant, but the father declared otherwise. He called for the best robe, a ring, shoes, and a feast with the fattened calf.
"God has fixed you as His son. God has fixed you as His daughter. Nothing can change that relationship."
Every time the Father sees us in His presence, He loves it. When we call upon the name of Jesus, He has compassion. That's why He's called Jesus Christ, the Savior, the Messiah.
Living in His Goodness
The goodness of God leads to repentance. It's not fear or condemnation that brings us back; it's the overwhelming realization of how good He is. When the goodness of God comes in, it changes not just the inside, but the outside as well.
In Ephesians chapter 1, we see that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. This isn't just for a chosen few; this is for all who come to Him, including the Gentiles. You have special favor. Wherever you go, whatever you touch will prosper.
Ruth realized there was a good God when she heard about His provision. She made the decision, just like the prodigal son, to come back to the Father. And we can live with the goodness of God leading all mankind to His presence.
Conclusion
The goodness of God is not just a doctrine; it's an invitation. It's the Father running toward you with open arms, ready to restore, provide, and celebrate your return. No matter where you've been or what you've done, His goodness is calling you home. Arise today and step into the abundant provision waiting for you in the Father's house.
Reflect on This
In what areas of your life do you need to remember and embrace the goodness of God?
How can you become a living testimony of God's goodness to those around you who need to hear the good news?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your incredible goodness that never fails. I declare that I am Your beloved child, and nothing can change that relationship. Your goodness leads me back to You every time I wander. I receive Your provision, Your favor, and Your abundant blessings. Whatever I touch prospers because I belong to You. I am seated at Your table, clothed in the best robe, wearing the ring of sonship. Thank You for running toward me with open arms. In Jesus' name, Amen.
